One of the first questions I get from couples, seniors and families is: “Where should we take our photos?” The Shenandoah Valley is full of beautiful spots, and Harrisonburg has so many hidden gems for portraits. Whether you’re planning family photos, senior portraits, or an engagement session, here are some of my favorite local locations that never disappoint.
JMU’s Edith J. Carrier Arboretum
This location is gorgeous year-round, with walking trails, trees, bridges, and water features. The Arboretum has both wide-open spaces and tucked-away spots, giving us plenty of variety in a single session. Admission is free, but there is a $35 photo permit fee, which reserves a 2-hour time block for you.

Can you believe this was taken at the JMU Arboretum in DECEMBER?! Switzer Lake
Nestled in the George Washington National Forest, Switzer Lake is one of Harrisonburg’s most scenic portrait spots. With sparkling water, mountain views, and tree-lined trails, it offers a mix of peaceful and dramatic backdrops. The lake is beautiful year-round—lush and green in summer, colorful in fall, and serene in winter. It’s perfect for couples who want an adventurous, romantic setting or families who love the outdoors. Because it’s a little more tucked away, it also has that “hidden gem” feel that makes photos extra special. It's completely free, but you will likely need a 4-wheel-drive vehicle to get down there, because the road is crazy!

For something truly unique and romantic, White Oak Lavender Farm is a favorite. The rolling rows of lavender create soft, colorful backdrops that feel straight out of a storybook. During peak bloom in the summer, it’s especially magical, but the farm is beautiful year-round with its mountain views and vineyard on the property. This location is perfect for couples looking for a whimsical, elegant setting—or families who want portraits surrounded by the natural beauty of the Shenandoah Valley. There is a small entry fee to the best area of the property, and a photo fee depending on the season.

Imagine having your photos taken in lavender! Purcell Park
Purcell Park is a local favorite for portraits, offering a little bit of everything in one place. You’ll find wide open fields, charming bridges, winding walking paths, and beautiful clusters of trees that change with the seasons. It’s a fantastic option if you’re looking for variety without having to travel far. Whether you want a playful family session, a romantic engagement shoot, or a set of classic portraits, Purcell Park provides plenty of natural backdrops that feel timeless and relaxed. The best part, it's completely free and easy to access!

One of the best spots at Purcell is under the giant tree near the pond! Private Properties
Sometimes the best spot is closer than you think—your family farm, backyard, or a relative’s property can add meaning and sentiment to your photos. If you have a location that’s special to you, I love making it part of your story.

This couple chose to do their engagement photos at their family farm in Churchville! Showalter's Orchard
About 20-minutes north of Harrisonburg, Showalter’s Orchard is a stunning choice. With rolling hills, rows of apple trees, and sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, it’s hard to beat the charm and natural beauty of this location. In the spring, the blossoms are soft and romantic, while autumn brings vibrant colors and that cozy orchard feel. It’s also a perfect spot if you love the idea of incorporating the Shenandoah Valley’s agricultural roots into your photos.

I've done photos at Showalter's in almost every season, and it always looks perfect! No matter which Harrisonburg location you choose, the most important thing is that your photos reflect who you are and the season of life you’re in. I’d love to help you create timeless, joy-filled images that you’ll treasure for years to come.
