The Ultimate Outfit Guide for Your Photoshoot

Let’s be honest: picking out an outfit for a regular day can be tough, but choosing what to wear for a photoshoot? That’s a whole other level of challenge. Luckily, I’ve put together some tips to help you choose outfits that photograph beautifully and make you feel confident — without the stress.

This guide is mainly aimed at my lovely female clients, but you can apply the color ideas to men as well!

1. Consider the Environment
The first step in planning your outfit is thinking about where your photos will take place. Are you shooting outside or inside? At a park, in a studio, or in a bedroom? Understanding the environment helps you pick colors, textures, and accessories that will complement the setting.

For example:
  • A retro-themed diner calls for a completely different outfit than a casual backyard shoot.
  • Outdoor sessions often look best with outfits that flow, have soft textures, and contrast nicely with natural surroundings.

2. Think About the Type of Shoot
Your outfit should also match the style of the photoshoot:
Casual Sessions:
  • Relaxed, comfortable, and fun — perfect for candid or personality-filled shots.
  • Think day-to-day outfits: jeans, skirts, sundresses, or blouses.
  • Footwear can either dress the outfit up or keep it casual.
Formal Sessions:
  • Structured and posed, with a focus on elegance and sophistication.
  • Dresses, skirts, or even gowns are perfect.
  • Take extra care with hair and makeup for a polished look, maybe adding an updo or a bold lipstick.

3. Choose an Aesthetic
Next, consider the vibe or aesthetic you want your photos to have:
Bright, Flirty, and Fun:
  • Casual: Light/bright solids, whites, pastels, t-shirt dresses, or sundresses.
  • Formal: Flowing dresses, short or long, comfortable fabrics — nothing too flashy unless it’s a prom-style shoot.
Moody and Dramatic:
  • Casual: Darker colors, distressed denim, slits, lower-cut tops, or fishnet tights.
  • Formal: Deep tones, slits, fitted or flowing dresses, tasteful jewelry, or statement pieces like a corset or cape.

4. What to Leave in the Closet
Unless your shoot calls for something very specific, here’s what to avoid:
  • All black outfits (unless intentional) — they can hide detail and texture.
  • Bold, busy patterns — they often distract from the subject.
  • Large logos or graphics — they pull attention away from your face.
Most importantly, never wear anything that makes you uncomfortable. Tugging, adjusting, or feeling self-conscious ruins the fun of a shoot — and your photos will reflect that.

5. Ask for Help
When in doubt, reach out to your photographer with your outfit options. They’re happy to give advice and help you feel confident in your look. Remember, your goal is to feel good, look beautiful, and have fun!

Bottom Line
  • Choose outfits that match your location, session type, and desired aesthetic.
  • Stick to colors and textures that flatter and photograph well.
  • Avoid bold prints, oversized logos, and anything uncomfortable.
  • Always prioritize feeling confident — your photos will shine when you do!
