5 Creative & Meaningful Details from Our Wedding Day

If you know me, you know I love to get creative — it’s one of the reasons I’ve always been drawn to both theatre and photography. Give me an idea, and I’ll find a way to make it happen! So naturally, when it came time to plan my own wedding, I wanted every detail to feel personal, meaningful, and completely “us.”
Here are a few of the creative touches that made our wedding day so special and memorable.
1. Family Wedding Dresses
I had a wild idea to display wedding dresses from both my family and my husband’s family. We gathered dress forms and photos of each bride, creating a beautiful display of love and legacy. From left to right, we featured the mother of the bride, grandmother of the bride, grandmother of the groom, and mother of the groom.
Each dress had a small label with the wedding date, and the display became such a conversation piece for our guests. My favorite part was taking a photo standing right in the middle of all those dresses — surrounded by generations of marriage that came before ours.
2. The Bridal Book
In front of the dress display sat a photo album filled with pictures of brides from both families. Before the wedding, I included a small note with each invitation, explaining the idea and asking every woman in the family to send a photo of themselves in their wedding dress along with their maiden name and wedding date.
It turned into a truly beautiful keepsake — one I plan to keep adding to as more brides join the family. It’s a wonderful heirloom that celebrates love through the generations.
3. DIY Bouquets
This wasn’t the original plan! We had intended to order flowers from a local florist, but as the wedding got closer, I decided to take matters into my own hands (literally). My family and I made a spontaneous trip to Wegman’s, and by some miracle, they had many of the flowers I had dreamed of but couldn’t find elsewhere!
The night before the wedding, my bridesmaids, my family, and I turned on some music and made our bouquets together. It ended up being one of the sweetest, most joyful parts of the weekend — a memory I’ll never forget. And a special shoutout to my aunt, who clearly had some hidden florist skills!
4. The Peanut Butter & Jelly Unity Sandwich
You’ve probably seen traditional unity ceremonies — lighting candles, pouring sand, or tying a knot — but we wanted something a little more us. Inspired by a TikTok I came across, we created a Peanut Butter & Jelly Unity Sandwich.
During the ceremony, we assembled the sandwich together and each took a bite as our officiant explained the symbolism:
“The bread is the backbone holding it all together, just as God holds your marriage together. And once the peanut butter and jelly are combined, the two have become one.”
It was meaningful, funny, and definitely a hit with our guests!
5. Family Mementos & Personal Touches
Throughout the day, we found little ways to honor the people and memories most special to us.
I carried family mementos on my bouquet, tying in pieces that reminded me of loved ones.
My custom wedding dress was paired with a custom gown for my mom — both meaningful in their own ways.
My husband even wore special socks chosen just for the occasion.
We included a memorial table with a heartfelt poem, special ceremony songs, and a photo guestbook for guests to sign and share memories.
And to top it all off, our custom cocktail hour activity cards gave guests something to smile and laugh about while celebrating with us.
