Romantic Engagement Photos at the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum & JMU Campus

Engagement sessions are always some of my favorites to photograph — there’s such a sweet energy between couples as they get ready to start a new chapter together. And when a session takes place right here in Harrisonburg, surrounded by blooming gardens and the charm of James Madison University’s campus, it’s even more special.

This engagement session was the perfect mix of sentimental and scenic. We started at the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, one of my favorite local spots for portraits, and finished up on JMU’s campus, where the couple first met. They brought along their sweet dog, who absolutely stole the show in a few photos — because what’s better than celebrating your engagement with your best furry friend?

Why These Locations Work So Well Together
The combination of the arboretum and JMU’s campus gives couples the best of both worlds. The arboretum is full of soft greenery, winding paths, and quiet corners — it’s ideal for those romantic, nature-filled portraits that feel timeless and genuine.
Then, JMU’s campus adds a sense of story and personality, especially for couples with a connection to the university. From the classic stone architecture to the open lawns and pretty evening light, it’s the perfect setting to end the session on a meaningful note.

What We Focus On During Engagement Sessions
My goal for engagement photos is always to create a session that feels natural, fun, and truly reflective of who you are as a couple. That means plenty of variety — two outfits, a mix of candid and posed shots, and space to simply enjoy the moment together.
We’ll start with relaxed, comfortable poses to warm up and capture that casual connection, then move into something a little more dressed up for elegant portraits that feel like they belong in a frame. I guide you the whole way so it never feels stiff or awkward — just easy and genuine.
And of course, when you bring your dog along, we make sure they get their moment to shine too (and a few treats, of course).

Tips for Planning Your Engagement Session
If you’re considering Harrisonburg for your engagement photos, here are a few quick tips:
  • Choose two outfits: One casual and one dressy gives your gallery a polished, balanced look.
  • Plan around golden hour: The light at both the arboretum and JMU’s campus is especially beautiful in the evening.
  • Include personal touches: Whether it’s your dog, a picnic, or simply walking through a place that means something to you, it adds depth and authenticity to your photos.
