There’s something really special about extended family sessions — having multiple generations gathered together in one place, laughing, hugging, and making memories that will be cherished for years to come. This beautiful session took place on private property in Elkton, Virginia, and it was the perfect setting for capturing those genuine, heartfelt moments that make family portraits so meaningful.

Why I Love Extended Family Sessions
When families take the time to plan a session that includes grandparents, grown children, and grandchildren, it becomes more than just photos — it becomes a memory in itself. These sessions are full of little moments that tell the bigger story of a family’s connection: kids running through the grass, cousins giggling together, grandparents beaming proudly at everyone gathered around them.
I always aim to photograph a mix of both traditional portraits and candid interactions so your final gallery feels full and balanced. You’ll end up with those classic group shots everyone treasures, plus plenty of smaller combinations — siblings together, grandparents with grandkids, and each individual family unit too.
The Setting: A Beautiful Private Property in Elkton
This particular property couldn’t have been more perfect. With wide open fields, soft evening light, and a peaceful mountain backdrop, it gave us plenty of room to spread out while keeping the setting relaxed and natural. The landscape added that timeless Virginia charm that pairs so well with family photos — simple, beautiful, and full of warmth.
What We Focus On During Family Sessions
Every family session I photograph is about more than just posing everyone together. I want to capture genuine connection — the in-between moments, shared laughter, and hugs that show who you really are as a family.
During extended family sessions, I make sure we have time for:
Full group portraits (the everyone-together shot!)
Smaller family groupings
Candid and playful moments between sessions
A few portraits of the grandparents or couples — because they deserve their own special photo, too!
By the end, you’ll have a well-rounded gallery that truly represents your family story.
Planning Your Own Family Session
If you’re thinking about booking a family session, here are a few tips:
Choose a meaningful location. Private property, a family home, or a favorite local spot adds sentimental value.
Coordinate, don’t match. Pick a soft, cohesive color palette that complements the setting without feeling too uniform.
Keep things relaxed. The best smiles often come in the moments between poses!
