Megan & Kyle’s Periwinkle Sky Ridge Farm Wedding

5 min read

Megan and Kyle’s June wedding at Sky Ridge Farm in Waynesboro, Virginia was one of those wedding days that somehow seemed to get better as it went along. With a classic periwinkle, navy, and light blue color palette, cowboy boots, a classic car, two very well-behaved dogs, and a reception full of throwback music and dancing, their day was full of details that felt completely like them.

Then there was the weather. Rain had been on our radar all day, and we weren’t quite sure what the skies had in store for us. Thankfully, the rain held off and gave us a beautifully cloudy day instead—a photographer’s dream. The soft, even light meant we could take full advantage of the property without fighting harsh summer sun, and eventually, the clouds gave us not one, but two golden-hour opportunities. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

Getting Ready at Sky Ridge Farm

One of the things we love about Sky Ridge Farm is the getting-ready spaces. They are beautiful, spacious, and thoughtfully designed, giving both sides of the wedding party plenty of room to settle in and enjoy the morning. For some reason, the groom sometimes gets the short end of the stick when it comes to getting-ready spaces! Kyle certainly didn’t. He spent the morning getting ready in his light blue suit—a choice we were very happy to see. We love a groom who isn’t afraid to step outside of the traditional black or navy suit, and the soft blue was perfect with the rest of their wedding palette.

Megan’s bridal details carried the same effortless summer feel. Her bouquet was inspired by wildflowers, with a loose, natural look that paired beautifully with the soft blues throughout the day.

And, of course, both Megan and Kyle wore cowboy boots. Because what’s a Sky Ridge Farm wedding without them?

Private Vows Before the Ceremony

Megan and Kyle chose not to have a first look, but they still wanted a private moment together before walking down the aisle. Instead, they exchanged private vows. It gave them a chance to slow down and have a moment that belonged completely to the two of them before the rest of the wedding day began. And that seems to be a theme with these two: there is a very noticeable sense of peace between them. Kyle brings so much joy to Megan, and Megan has a way of bringing a quiet sense of peace to Kyle.

A Ceremony With Two Special Guests

Megan and Kyle’s dogs, Jake and Piper, were an important part of their wedding day. They joined the wedding party for portraits and even walked down the aisle with the maid of honor and best man.

And somehow, these two managed to remain exceptionally well-behaved throughout the ceremony.

We’re giving Jake and Piper full credit for their professionalism.

Classic Car Portraits at Sky Ridge Farm

After the ceremony, we took advantage of the beautiful Sky Ridge Farm property for portraits—and brought along something pretty special. Megan and Kyle had a classic car for their portraits, giving us another opportunity to create something a little different from the typical wedding portrait lineup.

The combination of the historic-looking barn, the open property, their formal wedding attire, cowboy boots, and the classic car created such a fun contrast. Sky Ridge Farm may be a barn venue, but it is a very beautiful barn, and there were plenty of places around the property to make their portraits feel varied and intentional. Then the clouds started to break. We had originally thought the weather might foil our plans for a beautiful sunset, but instead, we ended up getting creative with it. As the clouds began clearing, we captured what we jokingly called a “fake sunset” earlier in the evening. Later, we got the real thing. Two golden-hour portrait opportunities in one wedding day? We certainly weren’t complaining!

A Reception Full of Things Megan & Kyle Love

Megan and Kyle wanted their reception to be about one thing: having fun with their people.

They love playing games, so instead of a traditional favor, guests received board games—a detail that felt much more personal than simply sending everyone home with another wedding trinket.

Dessert was an ice cream bar, and a live band kept everyone on the dance floor with throwback songs that Megan and Kyle love. They chose to dance the night away rather than end the evening with a traditional send-off, and honestly, we think that was the perfect choice for them. But before the dancing really got underway, they had one more surprise.

A Grand Entrance Instead of a Grand Exit

Rather than ending their reception with a grand exit, Megan and Kyle decided to make an entrance.

Their classic car came back into the picture as they drove it around the barn and made their way toward the reception. As they got out and walked toward the barn, their guests showered them with flower petals. It was unexpected, joyful, and completely memorable. It made for the perfect transition into a night of celebrating.

The Little Things That Said Everything

One of our favorite moments from Megan and Kyle’s reception came during the best man’s speech. He talked about how Megan is always touching Kyle’s arm whenever they’re together. Even while he was giving the speech, Megan’s hand was resting on Kyle’s arm. It was such a small thing, but it perfectly captured something we had noticed throughout their entire wedding day. Megan and Kyle have a way of naturally gravitating toward one another. Those are the moments we love photographing most. Not because they were planned, but because they are simply them.
